Once upon a time, love was so simple. Your parents met at a village party, exchanged glances over a plate of Pounded Yam and Efo riro, and boommmm 30years later, they’re still together arguing about NEPA bills and the best way to cook Egusi soup, gisting and banting.
But in 2025 Nigeria???? Love is looking like a group project where only one person is doing the work.
Let’s be honest- does love still exist, or are we all just managing because “God when” is not a financial plan?
The rise of “let’s see how it goes” love (speaking from the perspective of the queen of let’s just see how it goesππ)
Gone are the days of “will you be my girlfriend?” now, relationships start with:
· “I really like your vibe.”
· “I don’t want to put a label on it but I feel something.”
· “We are just enjoying ourselves, no pressure.”
Ahhhh! You think you’re dating, but you’re actually on a 3-month free trial with no guarantee of renewal (3 month far sefπ)
The economy is economying
Love is sweet, but have you tried checking the price of flights to Zanzibar? Or even just cooking gas? (im sorry cooking gas don pass just), dating in Nigeria is now an extreme sport.
Someone says, “Let’s go on a date” and you’re already calculating:
· Uber to the restaurant (God help you you’re not in Lagos) 20k to and fro and if God decides not wooooooooooπππ
· Two plates of spaghetti Bolognese (nor be say you sabi chop am buttttt you have to look like you sabi rich food na ππand 2 plates cuz you can’t be stingy naaaa) 30k (affordable restaurant ni ooo)
· A milkshake or any drink (obviously not coke and Fantaπ) just so you don’t look like you’re suffering 7k *2 = 14k
· Don’t worry cloth and shoe dey wardrobe
· And the mental peace when you see the bill-priceless.
It’s no surprise that many people are staying in “it’s complicated” relationships just to avoid these expenses
Social media has spoiled everything
Back in the day, all you had to do was love someone. Now? You have to:
· Be their personal photographer (because how will instagram know I am fine naaπππ do you getttt)
· Prove your love with TikTok couple challenges because why notπ
· Compete with soft life twitter who think a man that doesn’t fly you out monthly is a scam
At this point, are we dating or just financing each other’s lifestyle?
Ohh there’s the extreme feminism twitter who the part where the bible talks about submission is their major headache or the foolishest (I know it’s not a real wordπ) of all Agba john doe twitter who I am sorry is just a bunch of mentally deranged humans whose brain I highly doubt function(if you like come for me, I’ll just cry)
At this point, is it true love or just keeping up appearance?
So, are we still managing or nahhh?
The truth? True love still exists (don’t worry I sometimes doubt it tooπ), but it’s harder to find. Between economic struggles, situationships and the pressure to look perfect online, a lot of people are just settling for what’s available rather than waiting for the real thing.
Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but if love now requires a travel itinerary, count me out.
But if you’re lucky enough to find someone who genuinely cares for you, supports your goals, and doesn’t make you share rent 50/50 while still calling himself the head of the houseππ, hold them tight.
Because in this Nigeria? Love might be scarce (not even might it isπ) but finding someone who won’t stress you? Rarer than a fuel subsidy that actually makes sense.
